About

Break out your badges for people whose days we want to celebrate –

a great cloud of witnesses

This site is dedicated to the great cloud of witnesses that have (mostly) preceded us.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Hebrews 12:1,2 NIV

Do you see what all this means – all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on?  It means we’d better get on with it.  Strip down, start running – and never quit!  No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins.  Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in.  Hebrews 12:1,2a  The Message.

My “Days” file started sometime in the early 1990s.  Sometimes they were first presented (spoken) in church. Sometimes they were just on my general practice (medical) consulting room desk for people to take when they saw the badge I was wearing.  Sometimes it was just through email.

I have found it to be a very useful encouragement tool to strengthen people’s faith or to stimulate where there has been no faith.

It was in 1994 that I became aware of “Don’s Diary”, a segment in New Life magazine by Don Prout where he would highlight a person (or persons) of faith under the heading “next Sunday is…” usually by their significant dates or by an anniversary of a significant event.  I wrote to Don and I was able to get a complete index of the dates he had collected and also several books.  Don’s life is itself very much to be celebrated so there is a day dedicated to him.  Also see Donald Prout.com.

The badge size on the individual pages fits a standard plastic name badge holder.  Just wearing the badge makes people look and stimulates discussion.  May you find the experience a challenge and a delight and as you put on your badge for the day commit the process to our Heavenly Father who delights in His children.

Due to a variety of other interests, demands and a busy practice I have not added substantially to the file in the last decade. I now hope to add regularly and also gradually revise the old entries.  It is my intention to keep to the 1 page format.  If you wish me to add a favourite witness you are free to write to me with a suggestion and some biographic detail or references.  If you are copying from the work of another please include that reference.  If you wish to use the badge concept and your own printed commentary feel free but I retain the right to decide what will go on the website.
